Critical Self-Reflection Instructions

 


You will be assessed on your ability to analyse your own work and assess your progress over the course. Your essay must answer the following questions (600 words minimum):

Candidates must explore the following compulsory questions:

 

  1. How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues? 

  2. How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text? 

  3. How did your production skills develop throughout this project?

  4. How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?


So let us break it down...


1. How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues? 

  • What are the typical conventions associated with your product’s existing ads? Have you followed these or challenged them? How?
  • What are typical representations of your audience? Have you reinforced this or challenged this? Do you use stereotypes to convey meaning?

2. How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text? 

  • Who is your audience and how have you targeted them? 
  • How does your advert to a specific audience?
  • Where will your ad be shown? Why have you chosen this. Think of a few examples.
  • Please include media theories here (Reception Theory, Uses & Gratifications Theory, Barthes 5 Codes, Binary Opposites) < Does your advert use any of these?

3. How did your production skills develop throughout this project?

  • How did you feel at the beginning of this project? What skills have you learned/improved on? 
  • What changes did you have to make to your ideas, why?
  • How has your advert evolved over the last few weeks?
  • Are you better at using software now?

4. How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?
  • What software did you use over the course of the project?
  • What did you use it for?
  • How did it help you save time/be more creative/develop your skills etc. Hardware…Online… (blogspot, research, youtube etc)

You should be specific about how you employed the technology. Describe what you were able to achieve creatively & organisationally with these various technologies.
