Strict Matron Stereotype, Comp 1 Research

The strict female parent/teacher is a common trope of cinema. Their character design is very similar which has turned them into a very recognisable stereotype. Common features:

  • Very stoic, emotionless
  • Formal clothing
  • Buttoned up collar
  • Hair tied up
  • Often older
They are not usually the outright villain in a film, but often serve the narrative as an obstacle to their protagonist. Character development can be shown through the mis-en-scene, especially in the hair.

In the film Matilda, as Miss Trunchbull (also an aggressive sounding name) loses control of the school her hair, which for the entirety of the movie remains tight, begins to loosen and get messy, This loss of chaotic hair reflects the chaotic situation the school is in. Furthermore, The character of Ming in Turning Red is shown as a teen towards the climax of the film with her hair down, this is used to symbolise her vulnerability and loss of power.
