I have decided to separate my research and development from my front cover research to help me separate them and be more organised.
NOTE: Please copy this table into your own blogs and complete it based on a magazine within your chosen genre. You need at least two double page spreads (with image)
Here is my first double page spread research from a Science magazine called All About Space.
Before Reading |
Magazine: | Name |
Issue: | Date of Issue/ Issue No.: |
Publisher: | Find it inside the magazine or online. |
Genre: | Does it fit into a sub genre? |
Images: | How many images? What are the images of? What types of shots are being used? Why? |
Layout | What is the layout like? Is it heavy or light on text? Where are the page numbers? Does it have lots of negative space? Does it have a drop cap? |
First impressions: | What do you think of the double page spread? Does it look interesting. |
After Reading |
Heading: | |
Subheading: | |
Author: | Is there a byline? Is a photographer mentioned |
Article: | What is the article about? What is the message? |
Mode of address: | Does it address the audience directly (you, your etc). Is the writing style formal/informal, friendly/serious. |
Pull Quote: | Does it include a pull quote? What does it say? Why has it been used? |
Audience: | Who is the audience for this magazine? How were they targeted? |
Impression: | What did you think of the article? Was it fun, interesting, boring? Why? |
Inspiration: | What did you learn? How can you apply it to your own magazine design? |
Other things to consider: Does it have a Call to Action? (a suggestion for the reader like a link to a web page or a product to buy.)
Reflection: Discuss what you have learned from your research. How did this research help you with your idea development? If this is too similar to the "inspiration" part of your table, you can move it here.
